How to Administer Topical Medications

The following list of instructions will help you apply topical medications to your child:

Always wash your hands before applying a topical medication.

Wash the affected area of the skin and pat dry with a towel. Do not wash the skin if a doctor has directed you otherwise.

If no specific directions have been given, follow these general guidelines:

creams, ointment, gels, solutions, oils, and lotions: Use only a thin layer of medicine and rub well into skin.

aerosol: Shake well; hold can 6 inches away from skin and spray for several seconds.

Be careful not to get any topical medication into your child's eyes, ears, or mouth.

Wash your hands after the topical medicine has been applied.
